The Cambridge Analytica Whistleblower's
Inside Story of How Big Data, Trump, and Facebook Broke Democracy and How It Can Happen Again.

In this book the author narrates its story in relationship with the American elections of 2016. She also talks about how people were deeply manipulated, and talks about the future of data security.

  • People don't just vote on Election Day, they vote everyday with the choices (and patterns) of everyday life.

  • The problem was not Facebook or the SCL group (political consultancy owner of Cambridge Analytica), it is big data and the amount of information we, unaware, give away.

  • The laws are only as good as the technologies to enforce them. We need to reshape the data system to ensure our privacy and security.

  • To what extent are we controlled and manipulated by algorithms, behavioral sciences, and fake news?

  • How can we have a healthier, and safer relationship with the internet, and the data we give away in a world where social media is very un deregulated?

In general, if you like data, politics, history or computer science I would absolutely recommend this book. I didn't put into perspective the impact of data and social media had, not only in the US, but around the world (including the Mexican elections). It is a personal, well narrated story, with high social relevance.
